Are you worried about your 5-year-old grinding teeth while asleep? If you hear weird noises while your child is sleeping, he or she may have a common condition called Bruxism.
Below you will find the causes and effects of this condition, as well as how to help your child.
Bruxism, also known as teeth grinding, is a condition that happens when someone clenches the jaw or grinds his or her teeth. It usually happens when a child is under stress or in deep phases of sleep. It’s also pretty common as about 25% of kids will suffer Bruxism at some point in their lives.
Below are some common causes of teeth grinding in 5-year-olds:
Although uncommon, in some cases, Bruxism may wear down the tooth enamel or cause increased sensitivity of your child’s teeth. It could even cause jaw problems or severe pain in other places around the face.
If instead of hearing a quiet breathing, you hear your 5-year-old grinding teeth while asleep, they may be suffering from Bruxism, a common condition among children younger than age 5.
Although many kids outgrow Bruxism, the best thing you can do for your child is keep a close watch over the situation. If you observe your 5-year-old is grinding teeth while sleeping, he or she complains about facial or jaw pain after waking up, or if your child feels pain when chewing, you need to take him or her to the dentist.
The dentist might prescribe a mouth guard, molded to your kid’s teeth.
