Are There Any Alternatives to a Root Canal?

If your child’s dentist has recommended a root canal, you may be wondering if there’s another option.

Our Kool Smiles Kids Club partner dentists understand how important your child’s smile is. We’ve partnered with kid-friendly dentists who want to do whatever they can to keep every child’s teeth in tip-top shape.

Are There Alternatives to a Root Canal?

A dentist may recommend a root canal when a cavity or decay extends to the tooth’s root. A root canal can help improve discomfort, resolve infections, and prevent the damage from spreading further.

In general, the only alternative to a root canal is removing the tooth. A dentist will typically recommend a root canal instead of an extraction, even in a baby tooth. Baby teeth play a key role in the development of permanent teeth, and the best option is usually to preserve the baby tooth until it’s ready to fall out on its own. A dentist may recommend skipping the root canal if the baby tooth is about ready to fall out.

What Is a Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal treatment is nothing to be afraid of. If you had an unpleasant experience with a root canal decades ago, rest assured that dentistry tools, techniques, and technologies have advanced quite significantly since then.

During a root canal, the dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the area, so your child doesn’t feel any pain. They’ll use a special tool that lets them access the infected pulp and remove it. The treated tooth is then filled and capped.

What Are the Symptoms of an Infected Tooth?

There are several unpleasant symptoms that can signal a tooth infection, including:

  • Pain when chewing
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Swollen gums
  • Swollen jaw

Each child is unique, and your child may experience different symptoms. If your child is experiencing any sort of tooth or mouth pain, it’s essential you take them to see a dentist as soon as possible.
