A toothache can typically be caused by decay. Tooth decay is not a small problem—it is an infection in your child’s mouth that can lead to gum disease and even affect your child’s permanent teeth.
Even though your child’s baby teeth will eventually fall out, you should still teach your children to care for their teeth as early as possible.
Here are some ways to stop the pain from your child’s toothache until a dentist can help.
The first thing you want to do is look at the tooth that hurts. Occasionally, a child’s toothache might be the result of a bit of food stuck between the teeth. Use a flashlight to see clearly, and if there appears to something stuck in the teeth, gently use dental floss to remove it.
Please remember that if you choose to give your child over-the-counter pain medications to remedy the pain, it is very important to give the right dose for his or her height and weight.
Aspirin is not good for children and teenagers because it can cause the blood to thin out, so choose a different type of pain medication, or follow a doctor’s directions.
Keeping your child’s mind off their toothache is a simple remedy until you can get to the dentist. Put in their favorite movie, read them a book, or play a game.
Rinsing the mouth with a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water may help relieve your child’s pain. Make sure your child is old enough to rinse and spit. You can repeat this as often as necessary.
Sometimes a cold cloth on the cheek will help a toothache, especially if there is any swelling. If your child’s tooth is inflamed (the gums are red or swollen), a cold compress will work better than heat. Inflammation can mean infection, so if your child has a fever, get to the dentist right away.
