One of the most common procedures that you’ll receive at a dentist’s office is a teeth cleaning. Now, cleanings are typically performed by dental hygienists not the general dentist. Because teeth cleanings are so common, it’s great to get accustomed to the process before you even come in.

Professional teeth cleaning includes the following steps:

• Before your child’s teeth cleaning starts, the dental hygienist will conduct a physical examination of their mouth to check the teeth and gums and note potential issues, like gingivitis.
• After the physical examination, the hygienist will use a scaler along the gum line and teeth to rid them of existing plaque and tartar buildup.
• When this step is done, they’ll use an electric brush to brush your child’s teeth. This tool makes a buzzing sound, but that just means it’s working correctly. The tool is used to get rid of additional tartar left behind from the scaler. Don’t worry, we’ll let your child know all this beforehand, so there won’t be any surprises!
• After this, the hygienist will most likely perform a professional flossing to get rid of any remaining plaque and tartar.
• Here, they’re almost done. The next step is a simple rinsing to flush out any plaque still in their mouth.
• Finally, the last step of the process usually involves a fluoride treatment to help protect your child’s teeth from future cavities.
