Cure Your Child’s Swollen Gums

Healthy gums are pink and firm, but they become sensitive when they get swollen. How can you cure swollen gums?

There are many home remedies, but the best solution is to take your child to the dentist every six months for a routine cleaning and exam.

What Causes Swollen Gums?

Understanding why your child’s gums are swollen is one of the first steps in figuring out a solution. Some of the more common causes of swollen gums in children are:

  • Gum disease (gingivitis)
  • Poor nutrition (or malnutrition)
  • Cavities
  • Teething
  • Direct injury to the mouth
  • Poor brushing and flossing habits

While this is a start, this is not a complete list of causes for swollen gums. Take your child to the dentist in order to best determine why his or her gums are swollen.

How to Fix Swollen Gums Fast

There are several things you can do to help your child’s swollen gums improve if he or she cannot see a dentist right away.

  • Make sure he or she is gently brushing and flossing regularly. If poor dental habits are the cause of your child’s swollen gums, then improving those habits will help improve the condition of the gums.
  • Make sure your child is eating the proper foods and getting plenty of water. Adding more fruits and vegetables and avoiding caffeine and soda can make a difference.
  • Have the child rinse with a salt water mixture.
  • Be careful not to use mouthwash or toothpaste that irritates the gums. Definitely avoid them if they include alcohol.

Do I Need to Take My Child to the Dentist?

Though you may find a home remedy that helps with the immediate symptoms, it’s important to remember that swelling is the mouth’s reaction to what could be a bigger issue.

Swollen gums are a sign to parents to take their kids to a dentist who can correct the problem.
