Many children will need braces by the time they reach their teenage years. While insurance may cover the cost of braces in certain situations, some parents must find the money to pay out-of-pocket for their child's dental treatment.
By figuring out exactly which type of braces fit your child's needs best, you can save money on this generally expensive treatment.
If the braces are needed for medical reasons, many insurance policies will help cover the cost of treatment. If your child needs braces for cosmetic reasons, you're probably going to be paying for the braces out-of-pocket.
Metal Braces—This is the most common type of braces and, traditionally, the cheapest. They range in price from about $3,000–$7,000, and they also require frequent trips to the orthodontist for tightening and other adjustments which can raise the cost.
Ceramic Braces—These braces are very similar to metal braces with the exception that the brackets are either clear or the same color as the tooth. The prices of these braces range from $4,000–$8,000.
Lingual Braces—Lingual braces are very similar to metal braces, except they hide behind the teeth. This gives the appearance that you're not wearing braces at all. However, because they're located behind the teeth, they can be more difficult to adjust or clean which can raise the price. Lingual braces typically range between $8,000–$10,000.
Invisible Braces—Invisible braces, or clear aligners like Invisalign braces, work more similarly to mouth guards than normal braces. Invisible braces allow the wearer to eat and drink normally and are hardly noticeable to the naked eye. These braces can cost in the range of $4,000–$7,400.
How Can I Pay for My Child's Braces?
Contact your insurance provider to find out if your child's braces are covered under your policy. If you don't have insurance to cover the cost of braces, but an orthodontist still suggests braces for medical reasons, the cost may be tax deductible.
Medicaid may also cover the cost of braces if they are required for medical reasons.
In each of these cases, you should check with the dentist, orthodontist, Medicaid, or your insurance provider to determine what exactly is covered.
