Your Child's Guide to Dental Care: What is a Root Canal?
One of the most common treatments for dental care is a root canal. It repairs and saves a tooth that is infected or badly damaged.
At Kool Smiles, we believe education is key to a healthy smile, so here is some insight to what you can expect during a root canal.
Steps During a Root Canal
If a dentist determines that your child needs a root canal, here are the following steps he or she will take:
If your child's dentist believes a root canal might be necessary, the first step he or she will take is performing an X-ray to examine the tooth and locate the decay.
Anesthesia, or numbing medicine, will be applied to the area around your child's tooth where the root canal will take place.
Keep in mind that the use of anesthesia doesn't mean a root canal is necessarily painful.
The affected tooth pulp will be removed through an opening during a process called a pulpectomy. The dental pulp is the part in the center of a tooth made up of living connective tissue and cells.
The opened roots get filled with a certain material and sealed off with a cement-like liquid.
How to Take Care of Teeth After a Root Canal
With proper care, a restored tooth can last a lifetime. Root canals have a high success rates, and there are a few tips to make sure your child's teeth are cared for after this procedure:
