If your child’s tooth has been damaged due to injury or tooth decay, the entire tooth may need to be replaced. When the tooth needs more than just a filling, the dentist may recommend a process known as dental post and core.
Keep reading to learn what this process looks like.
Before a post and core treatment, your child will first need a root canal. Then, the dental post is situated in the root of the tooth, where it can hold on to a filling or crown.
The dentist will determine what type of post to use. Some posts already have the core included while others allow the core to be custom-fitted.
The post is often made of metal, and the core is usually made of amalgam or composite—the same materials used in a regular cavity filling.
While a dental core generally costs between $194–$337, post and core procedures can run between $233–$486, depending on materials used and how many appointments are needed.
Because each child’s teeth are different, the best thing you can do is speak to your child’s dentist about post and core treatment and how much it will cost.
