Tooth decay can happen to children of any age, and when it does, a root canal may be necessary. The root canal process varies depending on the stage of your child’s teeth and how much decay or damage the tooth has.
Keep reading to learn about a dental root canal and if it’s the right procedure for your child.
Our teeth are filled with soft tissue called pulp, which contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. When baby teeth are growing and developing, this pulp works to grow the root that holds the teeth in place.
When this pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to tooth decay or damage, it must be treated with a root canal to prevent problems. Treatment of inflamed or infected pulp is called a root canal.
During a dental root canal, the infected pulp is removed from the tooth and the tooth is then cleaned and filled with a rubber-like material.
Contrary to popular belief, root canals are not any more uncomfortable than having a cavity filled. If your child has to have a root canal, our dentists can assure that he or she will be comfortable during the procedure and feeling better in no time.
If your child is anxious about dental procedures, the dentists at Kool Smiles can give them a numbing medicine before the procedure. Our dentists have experience working with kids and want to make every patient feel as comfortable as possible.
For children who frequently experience dental pain, whether with baby teeth or permanent teeth, a traditional root canal is typically performed. Children who have baby teeth with less damage may benefit from pulp therapy to keep the baby tooth alive until a permanent tooth replaces it.
If your child is experiencing dental pain, visit a Kool Smiles location near you, or call us today to learn more about root canal treatment options.
