Many parents wonder when their children should see the dentist. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends taking your child to see a dentist when their first tooth appears. The sooner you begin caring for your child’s teeth, the better they’ll be at taking care of their teeth later in life.
Parents often come to us with questions about how to teach their children good oral hygiene habits. Here are some commonly asked questions about children’s dental care.
Q. Is there anything I can do before my child’s baby teeth come in?
A. Even if your child’s first tooth hasn’t appeared, you can still clean bacteria and plaque off their gums. We recommend using a soft toothbrush or cloth to gently wipe your child’s gums after feedings.
Q. What’s the difference between a general dentist and a pediatric dentist?
A. Pediatric dentists are trained in caring for dental problems related specifically to children. However, it’s not required that you take your child to a pediatric dentist. In fact, most children see general dentists. General dentists work with kids from childhood into their young adult years.
Q. When is the earliest I should take my child to see the dentist?
A. It’s recommended that you bring your child to the dentist when his or her first tooth appears. At Kool Smiles, we see children as young as one year old. Since they are so young, we provide parents with good brushing and flossing techniques that will help keep their children’s teeth healthy.
Parents and kids love coming to Kool Smiles. All of our waiting rooms are brightly colored and filled with games and activities, and most of our locations feature playgrounds that kids love playing on and exploring.
Many of our locations feature an in-house pediatric dentist, and all of our locations have skilled general dentists who are experienced in working with kids. They make going to the dentist a fun and comfortable experience for the entire family.
