The Importance of Dental X-rays for Children

Sometimes, your child may need to get a dental X-ray when he or she goes to the dentist.

Find out why dental X-rays are an important part of preventing tooth and gum disease and why your children should get them regularly as part of their dentist visits.

The Importance of Dental X-Rays

Did you know that the dentist can only see about a third of a tooth with the naked-eye? That leaves a lot of tooth surface that could be hiding issues such as growing cavities.

Cavities are signs of decay—an infection in living tissue that will spread if not treated right away.

Luckily, dental X-rays can show dentists the other parts of the tooth as well as other problems. The problems a dental X-ray can show include:

  • Cavities and tooth decay in between teeth
  • Bone disease
  • Gum disease
  • Infections under the gums
  • And more

Dental X-rays can also show how well the upper and lower teeth line up with one another.

Two Types of Dental X-rays

There are two types of dental X-rays that show dentists different parts of your child’s mouth—Bitewing and Panoramic.

  • Bitewing—Bitewing X-rays are close-up images of the teeth that can show problems, such as cavities. It usually takes four bitewing X-rays to show both rows of teeth.
  • Panoramic—Panoramic X-rays show all of the teeth and jaw bones and let dentists know if there are any problems with the jaw bones, jaw joints, and tooth roots.

Keeping tabs on your children’s teeth as they grow up is an important part of making sure they stay healthy and disease-free, and getting dental X-rays can make a big difference.
