Brushing your teeth may be the easiest part of your morning and evening routines. But do your children know the proper way to brush their teeth?
If your kids aren’t brushing properly, they could be at risk for dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease, both now and later in life.
What Is the Proper Way to Brush Teeth?
Proper tooth brushing can be hard to do if your child hasn’t learned the proper way. To make sure that your child is taking proper care of their teeth, remind him or her to commit to brushing at least twice a day—once in the morning and once in the evening before bed.
When they brush, make sure that your kids follow these four steps:
Place the toothbrush next to the gum line and gently brush in wide strokes.
Clean every side of each tooth, including the biting surface of the tooth.
Rinse with water, and have your child run his or her tongue along the teeth. If any spots feel fuzzy or not as slick as usual, brush again.
Don’t forget the tongue. Bacteria likes to live on your child’s tongue, and brushing it helps give your kid fresh breath.
What Happens If My Kid Doesn’t Brush the Right Way?
Properly brushing teeth is the best line of defense against bacteria and tooth decay. When kids don’t properly brush their teeth twice a day, they don’t effectively remove all of the food particles, plaque, and bacteria in their mouths.
If your children don’t brush properly, they will probably start seeing:
Tooth decay and cavities
