When your child has a tooth removed, he or she should expect a little pain afterwards. But if your child is still in pain a few days after the procedure, he or she may be showing symptoms of dry socket.
This condition is easily treatable by your child’s dentist, so it is important to take your child in right away.
Dry socket symptoms can include several things, the biggest of which is pain that does not gradually disappear. Other symptoms include bad breath and an unpleasant taste in the mouth.
The place where the tooth was removed will also appear dry, and you may be able to see the bone.
Dry socket only happens in about two to five percent of patients after a tooth is removed. When your child gets a tooth pulled, there is a little space left where the tooth used to be. That space is called a socket.
Usually, a blood clot forms over this socket to protect the bone and nerves underneath. Sometimes, this blood clot can wash away, leaving the bone and nerves exposed.
This can be painful for your child, but luckily, a dentist or oral surgeon can fix it with easy treatment.

When your child’s tooth is removed, the dentist will explain all of the ways you can help keep your child from getting dry socket after the procedure.
There are a few different ways a dentist might treat your child’s dry socket.
If it is less severe, the dentist may recommend pain medication like Ibuprofen. If the pain is more severe, your dentist may ask that you bring your child in to the office for an exam to help identify the problem.
The dentist will clean out the socket to remove any food particles from the hole. Then, the dentist will fill it with a special paste that helps ease the pain and heal the affected area.
It is important that you take your child to all follow up visits with the dentist after the tooth is removed to make sure his or her mouth is healing properly.
