Most parents know the basics of caring for their own teeth, but they may not know how to care for their young children’s teeth. Your child’s teeth require a similar process of care, but there are some specifics about kids’ dental care you should know. At Kool Smiles, we’re proud to be a force for making great dental care more accessible for everyone. This includes dental health information that helps parents understand their child’s oral needs. We’ve taken the time to answer some common questions parents ask about their child’s teeth.
Identifying and diagnosing dental problems early often makes those issues easier and less expensive to treat. Your child’s early dental health forms the foundation of their smile as they grow. You should take your child to the dentist as soon as their first tooth appears or before their first birthday.
Those unfamiliar with the specifics of the dental industry, as most parents are, often find it hard to understand what type of dental expert their child needs. Though there are nine dental specialties, you’ll typically want to take your child to a general dentist before scheduling an appointment with a specialist.
General dentists usually develop working relationships with your family and your child, meaning they can effectively spot differences and growing problem areas and get started on treatment options immediately. General dentists can also refer you to a specialist if they believe one is needed, so you never have to worry about receiving anything less than the care you need and deserve.
Yes, baby teeth are temporary, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t important. Baby teeth help your child chew and speak normally, and they also form the foundation that permanent teeth follow when they grow in as your child ages. Improper care of baby teeth can lead to problems when your child’s adult teeth grow in.
New parents aren’t expected to immediately understand how to care for their child’s oral needs. Great dental care takes commitment and learning. To clean your baby’s teeth, you’ll want to brush the teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and water. As they get older and learn how to spit, look for toothpastes that are designed specifically for kids. These are generally more sensitive to their teeth.
This is a big one. Parents want to know that they’re taking the right steps needed to properly care for their child’s teeth. It’s recommended that you take your child to regular dental checkups every 6 months or so, as well as any time a problem area causes irritation, or in case of emergency.
One of the best things you can do for your children’s oral health is make sure they’re getting the professional care they need. To see caring dentists near you at a low cost, make an appointment at Kool Smiles. Call us today at 254-781-0553 to schedule a consultation or appointment. Our Virginia Beach dentistry is open six days a week with Saturday hours from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm for your convenience.
