VIRGINIA BEACH  Kool Smiles, a leading provider of quality dental care in Virginia Beach helped one local child bring smiles to both children and U.S. troops this Halloween, through a special fundraising effort organized by students at John B. Dey Elementary School.

Virginia Beach resident Lauren Fenty, age nine, lost her father in Afghanistan when she was just 28 days old. In looking for ways to support U.S. troops this Halloween season, Lauren organized a successful school-wide candy collection at John B. Dey Elementary School, securing more than 770 pounds of candy for troops.

Having initially contacted another local dental office that was offering money in exchange for Halloween candy, Lauren decided to donate any money she received to Operation Smile, an international medical charity that provides medical care, training and education for cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities.

However, the collection effort by John B. Dey students was so successful that the cascade of candy was more than the dental office could handle.

That’s when Lauren discovered the Virginia Beach Kool Smiles dental office and its Operation Troop Treats program, an annual event that collects donated candy from local community members and sends it in care packages to troops overseas through a partnership with Operation Gratitude. Now in its fourth year, Operation Troop Treats encourages good dental habits at home while supporting U.S. servicemen and women abroad.

The Kool Smiles dental team is sending the candy collected by Lauren and her classmates to Operation Gratitude, along with dental kits for the troops. Kool Smiles is also giving Lauren and her fellow students a check for $500 to donate to the local Operation Smile chapter.

“We’re thrilled to work with such a humble and generous young girl who has gone above and beyond to make smiles brighter for kids throughout the world and troops stationed abroad,” said Dr. Ashley Nichols, managing dental director for Kool Smiles. “Lauren has been pouring her energy into helping others, and we’re proud to support the wonderful work that she is doing throughout the community.”

Lauren presented the $500 donation to Operation Smile on November 9 at John B. Dey Elementary School.
