Tooth enamel protects your teeth from chewing, biting, crunching, and grinding. Although enamel is a hard protector of teeth, it can chip and crack.
While enamel damage can be prevented, enamel cannot be built back. However, there are ways to protect and strengthen your child’s tooth enamel against daily wear and tear.
What Breaks Down Tooth Enamel?
The process of tooth enamel breaking down is called enamel erosion. It can be caused by several things, including:
Drinking soft drinks and fruit juice. Some of the acids found in soft drinks and fruit juice are as strong as battery acid. Over time, these acids eat away tooth enamel and can weaken your child’s teeth.
Eating a diet that is high in sugar and starch. These types of foods can damage a child’s teeth. To prevent enamel erosion, limit your children’s snacking (especially snacks that contain high amounts of sugar) and have them brush their teeth after eating.
Chewable aspirin. Several case studies reported by Colgate found that chewing aspirin and other medication can lead to enamel erosion. Once your child is old enough to swallow medications, avoid giving them the chewable kind.
How Can I Tell If My Child Has Enamel Erosion?
If your child experiences any of the following, it could be a sign that tooth enamel is breaking down:
Indentations on the surface of their teeth
Teeth with jagged edges
How to Strengthen Tooth Enamel
To strengthen weak spots in a child’s teeth, the first step is to avoid the behaviors that break down enamel.
Children should limit the amount of snacking, soda, juices, and chewable medicines they intake. In addition, your child should see a dentist every six months for a regular checkup.
