The Varela Family
"I love the way Kool Smiles treats my children. What I normally see is that my kids love coming here and they leave HAPPY all the time." Read their story »
Susana Varela has been taking her three children, Alondra, age 14, Luciano, age 11, and Ashley Nicole, age 9, to the Kool Smiles in Brownsville, Texas, since February 2009. Ms. Varela was very excited when she found out that Kool Smiles was in her area, because as there are not many dentists in Olmito, Texas, where she lives.
Ms. Varela said, "The best part of Kool Smiles is that it is totally different from the other dentist offices. I love the way they treat my children. What I normally see is that my kids love coming here and they leave happy all the time."
"My children are always ready to come to Kool Smiles because there is somewhere for them to play while they wait for their appointment time," she said. "The jungle gym and the waiting area are totally different, colorful, and fun."
Ms. Varela really loves the way Kool Smiles takes care of her children. She said, "My children all want to go back to the dentist. Even I can not believe it!" She added, "Even me as a parent, I love coming to Kool Smiles. I want to come back because I feel confident and well-treated."
The Toure Family
Kool Smiles "went above and beyond," said Ms. Toure. "They prepared the office for Isaiah's visit the night before, gave us a private room, and provided us with the first appointment of the day." Read their story »
Bethany Toure had spent eight years looking for a dentist to accommodate her son Isaiah's special need. Isaiah, age 11, has a life-threatening allergy to Latex, which was diagnosed at age 4. Ms. Toure knew how important it was for Isaiah to get regular dental check-ups, but hadn't been able to find a dentist willing to see Isaiah—until she found Kool Smiles.
Ms. Toure is a social worker and was attending a resource fair when she met her local Community Relations Specialist (CRS) for Kool Smiles. She shared her challenge of finding a dentist, and the CRS told her Kool Smiles would not only see Isaiah but make sure all precautions would be taken to ensure a safe and satisfying visit for both patient and mom.
The Fall River, Massachusetts, Kool Smiles "went above and beyond," said Ms. Toure. "Even though there had been a lot of preparation behind the scenes, when Isaiah arrived he was treated like any other kid. The staff treated him great and he was so excited to get his teeth cleaned that he took a picture of them!"
Ms. Toure could not be happier with Kool Smiles and Isaiah's experiences there. He has been back two more times, and each time he has had the same positive experience. Ms. Toure thanked "Kool Smiles of Fall River for easing the fears of a parent and allowing my son to have what every child deserves—comprehensive dental care."
The Salinas Family
Ms. Salinas became emotional and began to cry when given the opportunity to share her Kool Smiles experience. She couldn't be happier with the services her family received at Kool Smiles and said, "We are so proud of our daughter!" Read their story »
Hannia Salinas, age 2, had her first dental experience at age 1 in Monterrey, California. The family was vacationing when they realized that Hannia had a tooth with a cavity, and they did not want to delay taking her to a dentist. They found a pediatric dentist who was willing to see her while they were on vacation, and they made an appointment. Unfortunately, that experience was less than pleasant. The family was told to leave Hannia while she was in the treatment room. Little Hannia ended up having a very bad impression of going to the dentist.
When the Salinas family returned home, they saw that Kool Smiles was building an office close to them in Brownsville, Texas. They were overjoyed to think of a dentist accepting Medicaid in their area, since there is limited access to dental care where they live. Ms. Salinas immediately made an appointment for Hannia to have a hygiene visit.
Before Hannia's appointment, Ms. Salinas spent a lot of time preparing her because of the little girl's previous bad experience. But she was surprised at how well Hannia behaved. "Hannia feels like a big girl because she goes in on her own and tells me that there's no problem—and that she'd rather that I wait outside!" said Ms. Salinas.
Ms. Salinas enjoys the fact that "the staff explained step by step what they were going to do during the visit and the fact that they have a lot of patience." It's given Hannia's parents much peace that their only daughter is so excited about going to the dentist and actually looks forward to the experience.
The Ramirez Family
"The office is beautiful, clean, and entertaining," said Ms. Ramirez. "It is evident that kids are Kool Smiles' focus." She is referring all her friends to Kool Smiles. She said her children "love to come to Kool Smiles," and if they're happy, then she's happy! Read their story » You can also watch the video »
Susana Ramirez first heard about Kool Smiles through a postcard she received in the mail. The name and logo caught her eye, but it wasn't until a friend highly recommended Kool Smiles that she decided to bring in her two sons, Luis Angel, age 7, and Osvaldo, age 5, for dental appointments. Both boys have received hygiene and operatory treatment at the Kool Smiles in Eagle Pass, Texas, and both mom and kids were very satisfied with the treatment they received.
After Ms. Ramirez received the "seal of approval" from her older sons, she decided to bring in her 16-month-old daughter, Kayla, for her first dental hygiene appointment in her young life.
She said all three of her children "love" coming to Kool Smiles. Although Ms. Ramirez was satisfied with her children's former dentist, he relocated. The children are now very enthusiastic about going Kool Smiles. She said, "It's the perfect place to take children to the dentist." She only wishes there was a comparable office for pediatricians!
It's very important to Ms. Ramirez that her children feel comfortable and not fearful of going to the dentist. She likes the approach Kool Smiles has taken in their office. She believes it helps her children feel confident and responsible. She said all her children are treated with respect, regardless of age.
The Smith Family
"The staff are very friendly. They spoke to my children on their level and were very calming, and the jungle gym allowed the children to be distracted and have fun while waiting for their appointment." Read their story »
Judy Smith wanted to do the right thing for her children by making sure their dental health care needs were met. However, "Xavier was scared of the dentist and my younger daughter, Simone, had become scared of the dentist too," she said. Ms. Smith was thrilled when she learned about Kool Smiles. "I received a flier in the community along with multiple direct mail pieces and thought I would give it a try."
Ms. Smith's first trip to the Hampton, Virgina, office in June 2007 was enough to convince her that she had indeed made the right decision. When she entered the office, the staff immediately made her, Xavier, and Simone feel comfortable.
Xavier, who loves his chocolate and candy, had several cavities. Ms. Smith was worried about him having the needed treatment done, because Xavier's past dental experiences had ended in hysterics. To her surprise, Xavier not only didn't cry, but was happy leaving the dentist. "That is unbelievable!" Ms. Smith exclaimed.
Ms. Smith has been so happy with her Kool Smiles experience that she has been telling her friends and family all about it. "Xavier and Simone come to Kool Smiles every six months, and each time we have had the same experience, without an issue," she said. When asked if there was anything Kool Smiles could do to make her children's dental experience more enjoyable, Ms. Smith quickly answered, "Not a thing. Keep up the great work!"
The Parker Family
Ms. Parker said her Kool Smiles experience was "awesome" and she is thrilled that "both of her children are excited about going to the dentist and look forward to getting their teeth cleaned." Read their story »
Morgan Parker had been wanting to take her children, Kaylee, age 6, and Emmalee, age 3, to a dentist who had experience caring for and treating young children. Her options were limited in Dalton, Georgia, to a handful of providers. In mid-2007 a friend of hers told her about a wonderful new dental office for kids that had opened in the Liberty Square Shopping Center. Trusting her friend's judgment, Ms. Parker called and made an appointment at Kool Smiles.
Right away, Ms. Parker noticed that "the staff was very helpful and always smiling. All the employees were nice, well-mannered, and had a great bedside manner. I also loved that we did not have to wait long to be seen." She was also impressed with the information provided to her before and after her children's dental visits. She said she had a personal consultation during which the staff told her exactly what would occur during the children's hygiene visit, and then had another personal consultation to review the findings and recommendations. Fortunately for Kaylee and Emmalee, they were in good oral health and did not need to come back until their regular scheduled hygiene visit in six months.
Ms. Parker said, "Kool Smiles has also made it easier for me to care for Kaylee and Emmalee's teeth at home." Since her children have had wonderful experiences at their Kool Smiles dental visits, they don't fight her anymore about brushing their teeth at home!
When asked what Kool Smiles could do to improve, Ms. Parker replied, "Nothing. Everything about Kool Smiles is great. I am very pleased."
The Johnson Family
Ambia Johnson moved to Louisville, Kentucky, four years ago with her family. She found a dentist in the area to meet her children's oral health needs, but said, "They were more geared toward adults rather than children." Shortly after Christmas in 2008, she received a postcard in the mail advertising Kool Smiles, Dentistry for Kids. She decided to give Kool Smiles a try after her current dentist recommended she find a provider who focused on children.
Ms. Johnson first brought A'Miya, age 7, and A'Cadence, age 3, for appointments at Kool Smiles. Based on her past history of taking A'Miya to the dentist, she said, "I was prepared for a fight and ate my Wheaties that morning." However, to Ms. Johnson's surprise, A'Miya behaved wonderfully and cooperated with the Kool Smiles team. Ms. Johnson said, "I wondered to myself, 'Whose child is this?'" After her positive experience taking A'Miya and A'Cadence to Kool Smiles, Ms. Johnson decided to take her other children, Ja'Len, age 10, Johnathan, age 9, and Calvin, age 5, to Kool Smiles.
With each subsequent appointment, Ms. Johnson found the same friendly, warm, and professional environment at Kool Smiles. She said she "loves everything about Kool Smiles—their techniques, the staff's interactions with both the children and parents, and how they take the time to explain the process and procedures to you . . . and that none of my children cry anymore when going to the dentist."
Ms. Johnson and her husband, Rodney, couldn't be more pleased with Kool Smiles. Each time they bring their children in, they expect and receive the same friendly service.
However, Ms. Johnson said the biggest impact Kool Smiles has had on their family is the work they completed on her son Johnathan. Johnathan was born with special medical needs that require daily medication to maintain his health. Ms. Johnson explained that the medicine had affected the condition of his teeth. "Johnathan's teeth were rotted out from the medicine. He would never smile due to being embarrassed by the condition of his teeth." Over the course of several appointments, the Kool Smiles dental team replaced and repaired Johnathan's teeth. Ms. Johnson said, "Johnathan has not stopped smiling since he came to Kool Smiles. Kool Smiles has changed my child's life."
The Hernandez Family
"When we leave after their dental appointments, I leave happy and the kids leave happy," said Ms. Hernandez. How can you beat that? "I am so grateful that Kool Smiles decided to come to Laredo, Texas. Thank you, Kool Smiles!" Read their story » You can also watch the video »
Melissa Hernandez's son, Gustavo, age 6, was in excruciating pain. His mouth was hurting terribly and he was having sleepless nights. Ms. Hernandez called her current dentist, who offered her an appointment in three days. She called several other dentists in town and they either refused to see Gustavo because he was covered by Medicaid or offered an appointment several days later. Ms. Hernandez said, "I was frustrated. I didn't know what to do to help my child feel better." Gustavo needed medical care immediately.
She then remembered a flier she had received outside of Wal-Mart several months earlier advertising a new dental office in Laredo called Kool Smiles. Although she already had a dentist for her three children, she kept the flier "just in case."
Ms. Hernandez called the number on the flier and, to her surprise, Kool Smiles told her they would see Gustavo that day and to "walk in any time before 2 p.m." When Ms. Hernandez and Gustavo arrived at Kool Smiles, they were immediately greeted by staff who looked in Gustavo's mouth and suspected an infection. The dentist saw him immediately and confirmed that Gustavo did indeed have an infection and had to have several teeth removed. Right away, the pain in Gustavo's mouth subsided and he began smiling. Ms. Hernandez said, "I was thrilled and relieved that Gustavo got the medical care he needed."
Talking about her Kool Smiles experience, Ms. Hernandez said, "I was so happy that when I really needed services for my child, and even though they had never seen him before, Kool Smiles was willing to treat him. The staff was wonderful. They were sympathetic and caring and explained the procedures very thoroughly. I also met with the dentist and received further information on Gustavo's treatment."
After her wonderful experience at Kool Smiles with Gustavo, Ms. Hernandez transferred her other two children, Emily, age 4, and Carlos, age 6, from her current dentist to Kool Smiles. All her children love Kool Smiles and she has continued to have the same positive experience with Emily and Carlos that she had with Gustavo. Ms. Hernandez has been telling all her friends, family, and co-workers about Kool Smiles.
The Gutierrez Family
Ms. Leos says her children love Kool Smiles and actually look forward to going to the dentist. Read their story »
Diana Leos' children, Melissa Gutierrez, age 8, and John Gutierrez, age 4, have been going to Kool Smiles of Brownsville, Texas, for about six months. Ms. Leos decided to bring her children to Kool Smiles after receiving a card in the mail advertising their services.
Ms. Leos was immediately impressed when she arrived at the Kool Smiles office. The place was bright and colorful and catered specifically to children. "The office personnel smiled often, the kids loved the playground, and they were made to feel at home," she said. The Kool Smiles employees were "friendly and compassionate," she added.
Ms. Leos also said her own comfort level was raised early on, when all details of the work that had to be done on her children was explained so thoroughly. She spoke with the dentist only once, but it was a very informative conversation. Although Ms. Leos was offered the opportunity to watch her children's treatment, she did not feel a need to do so after their initial visit because of the "confidence she had in the abilities of the Kool Smiles staff" and their attitude and behavior with her children. John even had to have temporary teeth installed, and he went to the operatory room by himself and was totally fine!
Ms. Leos said, "My children love Kool Smiles. They actually like going to the dentist and look forward to their visits. They are not fearful and they're motivated to maintain good dental hygiene at home. It's wonderful."
When asked how we could improve Kool Smiles, her only suggestion was for a larger TV—and that idea actually came from Melissa, who helped complete the survey!
The Gamez Family
Ms. Gamez and her four sons are very happy they visit Kool Smiles. All the children love coming to the dentist and mom loves how easy it is on them and her. "We are seen right away, there are no long waits. It is a great place and I am very happy with Kool Smiles. They even remembered our names after the first visit, which really made us feel good," she said. Thank you, Kool Smiles. Read their story »
Priscilla Gamez watched and waited with eager curiosity as Kool Smiles built their office in Eagle Pass, Texas, in mid-2008. She said when Kool Smiles did open in September of that year, she began to see fliers in local stores around town and receive postcards in the mail about the new dentist office for kids. The advertisements were bright, colorful, and appeared very child-friendly, so she decided to give Kool Smiles a try.
Ms. Gamez initially brought Giovanni, age 7, George Allen, age 4, and Kevin, age 2, to Kool Smiles for hygiene exams. Ms. Gamez was thrilled with her first experience! She said, "The staff was so nice and friendly and they knew how to work with children." She also took note of the "fresh and clean environment" and the playground to occupy the children while waiting for their appointment.
After taking three of her sons to Kool Smiles, she brought in her 6-year-old, Alekxander, for an appointment. She said, "He was very happy and wasn't afraid at all. It was awesome. The environment is much different than other dental offices—it is so bright and clean and the staff is so nice."
Alekxander obviously agreed with his mother's opinion of Kool Smiles. When his appointment was over and it was time to leave, he turned to Ms. Gamez and asked, "Mom, can you leave me here and come back in an hour?" If that doesn't tell you how much he loved it, then nothing else will!
The Frohman Family
"I can't say thank you enough to Kool Smiles," said Ms. Frohman. "Kool Smiles put us at ease and helped us in an emergency event, even though we did not have insurance coverage. In my opinion, there is nothing you can do to improve Kool Smiles. Kool Smiles went above and beyond." Read their story »
Melissa Frohman, her fiancée, and her two children, Kane, age 5, and Elijah, age 4, were visiting the Tidewater, Virginia, area from South Dakota. They had been there for approximately two weeks when they found themselves with a dental emergency. Her boys had been "horsing around" and banged heads; Kane's two front teeth were knocked loose. "The teeth were hanging off and there was a lot of blood. We needed medical help immediately," said Ms. Frohman.
The family quickly got in their car and drove to the nearest emergency room. "We were told it would be a three-hour wait to be seen and Kane was in so much pain. He needed to be seen as soon as possible," said Ms. Frohman. She asked the ER for a referral and was told about an emergency dental clinic in town that was open 24 hours a day. "We arrived at the emergency dental clinic, but they appeared closed," she recalled. "There was a gentleman inside but he told us he would not treat Kane since he was not covered by the South Dakota insurance we had." Ms. Frohman called her insurance company, which found a local listing for Kool Smiles and referred her to the Virginia Beach office.
"It was 4:15 and the office had already taken their last appointment of the day. I told them we had out-of-state dental insurance and asked if that would be a problem," Ms. Frohman said. To her surprise and relief, Kool Smiles readily agreed to see Kane immediately and told her not to worry about payment. The most important issue at the moment was getting Kane the dental treatment he needed.
"Valencia, the patient coordinator, was so sympathetic and compassionate in our time of need, and Dr. Poole was very knowledgeable about the damage done to my son's gums and teeth. He was sophisticated, friendly, and did an amazing job like no other dentist," said Ms. Frohman. It was truly a wonderful experience!
The Cox Family
When we asked Ms. Cox if she had any suggestions for improvement, she replied, "No improvements are needed. I travel an hour and a half to come to Kool Smiles, but I love the people and they make my children love coming to the dentist...Kool Smiles truly cares." Read their story »
Natacha Cox is a responsible and attentive mother. Her four children, Kenneth, age 16, Kenosha, age 14, Kenique, age 11, and Troy, age 5, had been regularly seeing a dentist in rural Virginia since they were very young. But Ms. Cox said, "Kids are fidgety and don't sit still for long. The two dentists we had seen always complained that my kids weren't behaving well and it made my kids not want to go to the dentist."
In mid 2008, Ms. Cox learned from a co-worker about Kool Smiles and their kid-friendly environment. "Even though it was an hour and a half drive, I was willing to make the trip if it helped my children," she said. Right away, Ms. Cox knew she had made the right decision. "Kool Smiles made me feel welcomed and informed about my kids' dental care. The staff is so nice and helpful. They take time to explain to me about their treatment."
"I want my children to have a positive dental experience when they are young, so that when they turn 18 and make their own decisions they will continue to see the dentist." Ms. Cox has obviously made the right decision by choosing Kool Smiles. Her youngest child recently said, "Mom, I want to go back to the dentist," and she replied, "I know baby, but we can only go every six months!"
